How our dog has changed my Autistic/Aspergers son’s life

We used to have cats. Persian Purebred cats to be exact. My son never really connected to them and in the end we found out he was very allergic to them. But we had made a commitment when we got the two of them so we kept them for their full life time.

Fluffy lived to the age of 19.

Princess to never be out done by Fluffy of course lived to the age of 21 years and 11 1/2 months.

They were awesome companions for my family. When the children were little Fluffy got rides in their play shopping cart, swaddled up in a blankee like a baby and carried every where. Princess was the protector. She parked herself outside their doors at night and watched them. She would when they were babies lay on their blanket and watch them.  We got them both when they were 8 weeks old. After the cats passed our family missed them terribly. They were after all part of the family.

Fast forward now to August 2011. We have a child with life threatening allergies, so no idea can be decided without allergy testing. This child also happens to by my oldest, he is on the spectrum. Aspergers is not what defines him. Its just what helps others to be compassionate and try to understand where he is coming from. He is an awesome child.

We started allergy testing in September 2011 to see if we could have a dog in the house. After many tests and tears from blood draws and scratch tests we found out we have to have an hypoallergenic breed. So then we looked at sizes. We decided small is best as my son was scared of large dogs at that point. And we traveled alot in our RV at that point.

We started frequenting the pound/shelter. We decided we wanted a dog as young as possible. And we wanted to rescue one. We decided on a Yorkshire Terrier or a small Poodle. It caused many sad feeling every time we left with empty arms. So I told the kids I would just put us on the interest list and quit visiting the shelter.

January 1 2012 we got the call!! They had a Yorkie/Poo (Yorkshire Terrier/Poodle) The perfect mix! So I cancelled all our plans that day and off we went! She was dropped off at the shelter in November 2011 at a mere 8 weeks old and ounces of weight by a breeder. She was housed in an outside concrete cage for the winter. We were unsure of her. She looked too timid, wouldn’t make eye contact, Wouldn’t let us pick her up. And then the most beautiful thing happened. My son with Aspergers sat on the cold damp concrete and this little bundle of fluff walked out of the back corner of his cage right into his lap and set her head down and looked into his eyes. At that point my son said I think shes like me Mom. It was a done deal!

A boy and his best friend

Now people say We’ve “Rescued” Her. I Beg to differ. I feel she rescued us. She is my sons best friend, confidant, protector, at a mere 9 pounds. She is now 2 years old, full grown. She has allergies just like my son. Some of the same items actually! Corn, food coloring, fish, peanut oil. This dog is a perfect addition to our hectic family.

When my son used to come home from school he would be stressed. I had a rice bin with objects in it to comfort him. It worked! Now he comes home you can see the stress dissappear as his pup jumps up at him to be picked up. He bends over picks her up and she buries her head in his neck. Then the kisses start!

How could you not melt looking into those eyes he has asked me.

Now mind you this is a child that until we got this wonderful pup wouldn’t let you hug him without pulling back against your hug. If you don’t have an Autistic child you will never feel the heart break of that or the missed kisses, being told I love you Mom. He is not my only child. So I know both sides of the coin so to speak.

Well within 6 months of getting this little fur ball he so lovingly called Waffles due to the way she flattens out on the ground this child was 100% different. At first he’d pull away from her kisses. Now he gets upset if she doesn’t have any for him. She is always on him. He takes her everywhere. We have a trailer for the bikes. He straps her in there and off they go.

Proud of my boys

With much hard work. And patience we have progress on the boys adventure to get to Eagle Scouts in Boy Scouts.

It has been a long hard journey that will have a sweet ending. They can both see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

My oldest had a meeting last week to check his Eagle Application. It was accepted and is being turned in to the district. We should have a date for his Eagle Board Of Review in a couple weeks.

My youngest had a meeting last week to get his project plan approved so he can start work on his Eagle Project. This was try 2 on this part of his paperwork. It was approved!! Now he can start to fund raise and get a date for his project.

Both boys started this adventure in 1st grade as Tiger Cub Scouts. They earned every rank badge Cub Scouts has.   They ended Cub Scouts with the Arrow Of Light.

And now they are inching up on the highest rank of Boy Scouts also earning every Rank Badge Boy Scout offers.

Update! Both boys received the rank of Eagle Scout in 2013.

So proud!

Don’t eat at RODRIGOS

They discriminate against people with Life threatening food allergies.

We have been eating there for 15 years. Waaaay back to when they were called Don Jose. And my children were 2 and 4 years old. And have ALWAYS brought in food for kids.

Well tonight we were asked to leave. Oh I did after I gave them a ear full. And my husband vented.

I will NEVER eat there again.

I can’t say what I want to. Because I’m a better person than that. But I will give you a clean version. SCREW YOU RODRIGOS!!

Oh!! And everyone I know will soon know you discriminate against people with special needs/ food allergy children!!

Ok breathe… The children are fed. Now to figure out what my hubby and I will eat.

Seeing red!

All I see on my son is red.

Carls Jr used to cook only burgers on the one side of the grill. NOT ANY MORE!
Now burgers and fish are cooked together. And NO WARNING POSTED. My son has life threatening food allergies to all nuts, fish, shell fish.

So ya we are having a fun night. Oh and to add to my fun. The truck battery died.

Benadryl, inhaler, 6 epi pens out and ready for action. I will be up all night watching over him.

Hives came on MOMENTS after finishing his burger. We will see how he does if we make it through night without ER visit and he still has hives in am we will go to Dr.

Nivea really limits their consumer base

I mean most if not all of their products have some type of nut oil in them. Seriously! Read the label.

We have life threatening food allergies to nuts in this house. Nivea has awesome looking new lip balms out. With Almond oil in them.

I used my moms lotion one time a few years back without even thinking. I mean who would think nut oils are in a lotion?!

Well my son started wheezing and saying he didn’t feel well. Then it dawned on me. I used a lotion I never had before.

I ran to car got his asthma inhaler and epi pens then returned to lotion and read label, and that is when I saw ALMOND OIL in the list.

I washed and scrubbed my hands till they were red. Then I washed my sons face, he had red hand prints on cheeks from where I had touched him with my freshly lotioned hands.

I then gave him benedryl and called his allergist who said continue benedryl for 4 days every 4 hours.

I felt and still do feel horrible that I just used the lotion with no thought to read the label. LESSON LEARNED!

I steer clear from their products and so does my Mom.

And So The 2013 California Wildfire Season Begins

This afternoon I turned on the TV to see this.

And this was my expression :-0 Dang fire season. 3years ago my hubby’s work was affected by the Ca wild fires. The fire was in the Santa Ana river bed and caught onto his work.

Fortunately it didn’t burn it too bad. People did lose their homes though. 😦 I dislike the fire season a lot.

5-6 years ago half the state was on fire and I had to keep the kids home and tape the house shut and have masks on the kids and the nebulizer running pretty much non stop for my aspie/asthmatic.

We have an average of 7-10 days a year minimum the schools won’t allow the children outside due to Air Quality and particulate matter.

Many years ago there was a horrible fire in Laguna Beach. We lived there at that time. We got evacuated. Hundreds of homes were destroyed.

Anyway, fires are part of living in California like earthquakes and landslides.

I’m not sure why I’m rambling. LoL Make sure you have a safe fire perimeter around your property!
